Last night I went out to ride with my sister. I had the hopes of riding all of the rideable horses last night. I was going to start on Max and then ride LLL and let my sister ride Sis and then go to Abby.
As soon as I got the saddle on Max I noticed the neighbors cattle were out so I told my sister to call them. They weren’t home so I told her I’d push them with Max if she’d close the gate once they went in. He was such a good boy pushing them where they needed to go and it didn’t take long to get them put back up.
After that my sister jumped on Sis (dead head) and I rode Max in the RP. I wanted to focus on roll backs and stopping off of the word “whoa” and my seat. He’s pretty good at stopping when we are running but he’s not always consistent so I figured I needed to focus on it a bit more. The horses got pretty hot and by this time it was too late to saddle up any other horses so Heather and I decided to go for a quick trail ride to cool the horses out (you know because Sis was so hot LOL).
On the way down the trail I worked on Max’s neck reining. He’s starting to pick it up but we really didn’t have a lot of room to turn circles so I just left him alone. On our way back I turned for some reason to lope him off and he was being a turd about going away from Sis so I continued to lope him until he did it freely and in a straight line. That took us almost all of the way to the end of the path. Once we got there I asked him to stop, backed him up, rolled him over his hocks and let him run back to my sister.
I’ve never ran Max. He’s got a lope that covers a heck of a lot of ground so I’ve never pushed the matter to see how fast he can go. OMG can he fly! As I approached Heather she was giggling and said “boy is he fast”. I replied stating yes he was but that still wasn’t full out. I loped him back down to the end of the path and this time let him fly! I didn’t push him at all and I know he still had some speed stored back up but wow! It’s been a LONG time since I’ve just let a horse go like that and it was so much fun. I felt like a kid again (although we really need to work on his whoa from a dead run).
We headed back to the barn, unsaddled and I messed with Cat for a bit. By then it was 10:30 and time to head home.
