I need a camera man!

Last night we took Max to the arena to try to get some better video. I turned the camera on mute (which you’ll probably notice didn’t work) and told DH to try to stay steady.

This is what we got –

Here is his trot. In this video I’m trying to get his head in frame & let him move out at a more comfortable pace for him. Vertical flexion isn’t something we really work on a lot.

This one I was trying to get a slower trot. He’s really not going fast so if someone can tell me why my camera makes him appear like he is I’d love it (in all of the video he looks like he’s going much faster then he really is). Oh and nope – I rarely let him trot on a loose rein if I’m sitting. His comfortable trot (for him not me) is not very comfortable for me so I have to post it. He doesn’t speed up or slow but he’s just not as smooth as the QH’s I’m used to so if I want that smooth trot I ride him with a bit of contact.

Right lead

Left lead

Did you catch his stops at the end? I was having so much fun with him that after the camera came off we did some rollbacks and sliding stops. He can really get down and stop in the right footing.

DH started to question why he wants to sell him. I think he’s starting to realize that Max is our most dependable horse at the moment. He said if Max had even the slightest amount of cow sense to him he’d keep him. He keeps trying to compare him to Lucy the first time I had her around cows and I told him that’s not a fair comparison. I’m going to try a few things with Max to see if I can’t get him tracking better. We have an endurance rider coming to look at him on Friday (weather pending) so we’ll see what happens.

Feel free to critique. I know my legs need to come back more and I see a few other issues.

Those videos are really good. I noticed the stop in the right lead video right off and actually looked at it twice before I read the text. Really nice.

His trot, even the fast one, looks smooth on camera.

You look pretty good, too. Looking at your ear-shoulder-hip-heel alignment, yeah your feet were a little forward, but it wasn't that bad. Ranae says my feet have moved a little forward and I working on keeping them back underneath me.

Frankly, I think DH is nuts for wanting to sell him. The devil you know is much better than the devil you don't. He might get a very cowy horse that has a host of other problems. Max is smart, athletic, and sound. I think it would be easier to teach him cows than to teach another horse manners. (Of course, I'm a bit prejudiced because I've become quite fond of Max over you blog writings and I don't know a thing about working cows)
