Last night I RP’d Max to watch him move. He’s never moved freely at a canter on the line and I wanted to really watch him move. Counterclockwise he moved ok but I wouldn’t say he looked “free” but clockwise was another story. He could only maintain the canter for a few strides before you could see him stumble and lose it in his hind end. When that would happen he would turn and face up with me as if to say “I can’t do it”. I didn’t want to push too hard because I was sure he was sore and I didn’t want to injure him anymore then he probably already was. I didn’t put any DMSO on his leg nor did I give him any bute as I didn’t want anything to impede the vet’s diagnosis.
DH took him to the vet this am. I’m still waiting to hear back from the vet so I have my information straight from him (vs. from DH) but what I know so far is this:
Max has a severe sprain in his right hock. The vet drained the hock and the fluid was blood tinged (I guess that means it was pretty bad). He injected the muscle surrounding the hock and Max is off duty for 30-45 days.
So I guess the crazy trail lady wasn’t as crazy as I thought.

Maybe not as crazy, but still crazy.
How common is a hock sprain? Did the vet say how it might have happened?
If he has to take a month off this is a pretty good time of year because your season was winding down anyway.
I haven't had a chance to talk to the vet yet to find out how this could have happened or just how severe it is. I'm sure he'll call me this afternoon after he's done with all of his calls. That doesn't mean that I'll completely understand what he has to tell me. And yes, this is the best time (if there could be) for this to happen. Since DH will be gone and then the cold will hit and we won't be riding much.
